How Tawakkul in Allah Helps Muslims Overcome Anxiety

Going to bed at night and not having to replay the endless “what ifs” is a dream many of us share. Uncertainty about the future, hardships that aren’t getting easier, decisions that could cost us big time if they go wrong. We’ve all worried about these things at some point. And that’s exactly why Muslims have the gift of tawakkul in Allah. Tawakkul in Allah is a beautiful concept that takes the unnecessary burden off our shoulders by putting our complete trust in Allah—His wisdom, justice, and mercy. As we entrust our affairs to the One who controls everything—whose plans are always in our favour even if we cannot understand right away—we free ourselves from overwhelming anxiety and worry.

What Is Tawakkul in Islam?

Tawakkul comes from the Arabic root w-k-l, which means to entrust or to rely on. Tawakkul in Allah means trusting Him completely and relying on Him for everything while also making all efforts within our capacity. Tawakkul in Islam is not passive waiting. It’s not “doing nothing and leaving it to Allah.” Instead, Tawakkul is about doing our part, making du’a, and then leaving the results to Allah—knowing that His plan is better than ours, even when we don’t understand it yet.

And to those who do out their trust in Allah, He has promised:

“And whoever puts their trust in Allah, then He ˹alone˺ is sufficient for them” (Surat at-Talaq 65:3).

How Tawakkul in Allah Helps Overcome Anxiety?

One of the biggest causes of anxiety and overthinking is putting all our trust in apparent means and our own abilities, forgetting the One who is really in control. This mindset makes us distant from Allah. We forget asking Him for help. We forget that every plan of His is based on wisdom. We lost the ability to practice contentment and patience, the key traits of a true believer. Of course, having tawakkul in Allah does not mean we will never face any challenges. After all, this life is a test. But an unwavering trust in Allah does take away the unnecessary overwhelm of trying to control everything ourselves. It strengthens us when we know that Allah will never burden us beyond our capacity to bear.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“If you were to rely upon Allah with the reliance He is due, you would be given provision like the birds: They go out hungry in the morning and come back with full bellies in the evening” (Sunan Ibn Majah 4164).

Birds don’t sit in their nests all day. They fly. They search. And they trust.

Stories of the Prophets: Practical Examples of Tawakkul in Allah

Sometimes the best way to teach tawakkul to our children—and remind ourselves—is through the stories of those who walked before us.

Musa (AS): Between the Sea and the Pharaoh

With the Red Sea ahead and the Pharaoh’s army behind, the Bani Israel panicked. They thought it was the end.

But Musa (AS) said:

“Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me.”

He didn’t have a plan. He had tawakkul in Allah—and the sea split.

Hajar (RA): Alone in the Desert

Running between Safa and Marwa, thirsty, desperate for her baby Isma'il—Hajar didn’t give up. She didn’t wait for water to fall from the sky.

She ran. Back and forth. Again and again.

And Allah sent Zamzam.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: In the Cave

In the darkness of Cave Thawr, with Quraysh’s footsteps outside, Abu Bakr was worried.

The Prophet ﷺ reassured him:

“Do not be sad. Indeed, Allah is with us.”

How to Strengthen Tawakkul in Daily Life

Tawakkul in Allah is something that can be easily strengthened through small daily habits. Here are some ways we can practise tawakkul in daily life:

Begin with a Sincere Niyyah

Remember: Allah sees our intentions. If we sincerely seek closeness to Him and wish to increase our tawakkul in Allah, He will help us reach our goal. And there is no better way to begin than to ask Him directly for help. Make abundant dua after every salah, begging Allah to help you strengthen your tawakkul in Him.

Get to Know Allah to Trust Allah

Tawakkul in Allah is only possible if we know who Allah is—His attributes, power, and might. Increase your knowledge by regularly reading the Qur'an with understanding. Listen to online tafsir lectures from credible sources. Start small, but remain consistent in learning something new everyday.

Engage in Dhikr Daily

The closer you get to Allah, the more you'd be able to trust Him. And the best way to draw closer to Him is to remember Him often. Incorporate small duas into your routine. Make dhikr a part of everyday life. You can start with morning and evening adhkar from the Sunnah. Then gradually keep adding more once you become habitual. Know the meaning of what you're reciting so you can really connect with Allah instead of merely reciting some words. Remembering Allah like this helps you remain aware of His presence with you at all times and gently reminds you to put your trust in Him even amidst hardship.

Reflect on Past Struggles

When hardship strikes and seems too difficult to bear, remind yourself of your past struggles. Most of us have gone through certain phases in life where it seemed everything was over for us. We reached our breaking point. But the thing we forget is that we survived somehow and are still breathing today. We survived those unbearable times because Allah helped us live through them. and because He didn't place a burden on us that we couldn't carry. He never does. Tawakkul in Allah starts with trusting Him when He says: "God does not burden any soul with more than it can bear" (Surat al Baqarah 2:286).

Replacing “What Ifs” with Tawakkul in Allah

Tawakkul doesn’t mean life will be perfect. But it means we start saying things like:

“Even if my plans fail, I trust Allah’s plan.”

“Even if I don’t understand now, I know He is Wise.”

“Even if I’m afraid, I’ll take the next step with Him beside me.”

When plans fall through or you’re unsure, say aloud: “Alhamdulillah. I don’t know why this happened, but I trust Allah.”  Maybe today, you needed this reminder too. Tawakkul in Allah turns “what if” into “I know Allah is with me.” So, the next time your heart whispers fear, whisper back with trust:

Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal wakeel

Allah is sufficient for us.

A: Yes.
