Asmaa Hussein is the owner of Ruqaya’s Bookshelf (named after her daughter!). Her love of writing for both children and adults motivated her to create a platform where Muslim authors could tell their stories beautifully and authentically. She is the author of some of your children’s favorite titles like Bismillah Soup, Mr. Gamal’s Gratitude Glasses, and There was an Old Auntie who Swallowed a Samosa.

Beautifully written and illustrated books! Ruqa-ya's Bookshelf has filled a huge void in our community by bringing Muslim children's books with moral values that children actually enjoy reading and listening to.

This book will take you on a beautiful spiritual journey with the author as she takes hadiths and ayahs from the Quran that you regularly hear and relates them in a way that connects your heart to them. Everyone is struggling with something, and even if you have not dealt with overcoming the deep grief the author has, you can still relate to every aspect of this book, take lessons from it, and correlate it to your life. It is a quick read but a deep and meaningful one.

This author is so truthful, you can feel it throughout the book the good and bad days. EVERY humans goes through them and she was vulnerable enough to share those days with us. I cried and found hope through this

I don't think words can describe how this book made me feel during a time that I needed it the most. There were times where I would read this during my commute and I'd have to pause, close the book and take a deep breath. If you are debating on whether or not to purchase this book, the answer is yes. You must. It will not only boost your imaan, but also get you more in tune with your emotions. You feel deeply connected to Allah SWT while reading this. MashaAllah. May Allah SWT bless Sr. Asmaa and reunite her with her beloved in Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen.

This book is worth every cent. It is like you can feel the emotion she put into every word. I truthfully learned alot. I cant say .Maybe you should buy it lol. I love the theme, the symbolism and how she correlated that spiritually. She brings you on a journey, and I was a bit sad once I finished my last page. I can't wait for other books she will publish. I am slowly changing my perspective on how I see my faith again. Thank you again, Asma.

Ended up reading A Place of Refuge in one sitting. I didn’t think I would actually get teary-eyed but the last few chapters definitely brought tears to my eyes. This book is so insightful and in the intricate way that it has been written every thought or question I had was expanded upon in the following paragraph. I have come to learn new du’as and only further embrace Allah and all his glory 💕

I enjoyed reading Asmaa's book as if it's a personal diary. You really have to stop yourself from reading the book in one sitting. It's a wonderful book that will help you learn of growth and self care. You don't have to lose a loved one to connect with Asmaa's words. Through her sentences, she teaches us about appreciation of others and how to navigate our emotions. While reading this book you'll be overcome with a sense of peace, and a sense of comfort. Not once did I feel a sense of guilt when she spoke of Allah (SWT) rather as if she is showing me the way. I highly recommend this book as a beautiful quick read. Praying we see more of her beautiful work!

I had to limit myself not to finish reading A place of refuge in one sitting because I wanted to savour every single bit. Life got in the way and I was feeling extremely low on all levels when I got back to reading the last few chapters. Being distracted for a while with everything that was happening, turns out the last few chapters were exactly what I needed. Specially the last chapter hit too close to home. The reflections and reminders gave me a sense of tranquility and a nudge to do better in this temporary place. Saying I loved it would not do justice to how much I appreciate this raw, honest and beautiful work. Definitely a must read! Thank you Asmaa ❤️ May Allah reunite Asmaa, Amr and Ruqaya in Jannah. Ameen.

A Place of Refuge'...it's a beautiful and intricately written masterpiece. The way Asmaa expresses her inner most emotions in this book, grips a reader and tugs at their heartstrings. It's a journey about survival, hope, falling down and then getting right back up. Throughout it all reminding the readers that you're not alone in your struggles...there is a power high above...taking care of you at every step of the way, how important your connection to Allah is and how He loves you with all your imperfections and raw outer self. How in front of our Creator we don't have to put a brave facade and how we can be ourselves and say our heart out to Him. This book reminds you how to cope with a loss of a loved one and telling you that it's ok to feel lost, it's ok to feel the pain even after years have passed...as it's part of the journey to healing. This is what makes both of Asmaa's books, 'A Temporary Gift' and 'A Place of Refuge' so easy to connect to as she pours her heart out to her readers making it easier for us to connect with her life story, her feelings instantly. Thank you for sharing your story with us Asmaa. Wishing you the very best for all your future endeavors and May Allah bless you always...Ameen.

I just finished reading A Place of Refuge and the comfort and reassurance that Asmaa provides the reader is astounding. After going through one of the most difficult experiences a person can go through, she takes the reader on a journey or finding comfort through the One who is ever-present and the mender of our hearts. I was left in tears after reading parts of this book and it will leave a lasting effect on me as I remember Asmaa’s words during trials that I know I will face throughout my life. Truly an excellent book and one that I will definitely re-read inshaAllah.

Assalamu Alaykum dear Asmaa, I want to thank you for your heart touching book “A place of refuge “, when I ordered it for my 32 years old son and had been through different trials ,I wanted him to find peace and refuge in it even though I did not know the content ,but the cover of the book spoke it all .My son’s state of mind totally changed after reading it even his voice tone returned to normal especially after reading what you have been through .A friend of his also read it and Both of them totally found something made them in peace ,at least they know where to turn to ,it was a great reminder for them . Then He sent it back to me to read ,I finished it in two days , it really touched my heart in a way that I did not expect. Although I follow you on face book six years ago ,I know lots of details, but i found my self in tears while reading it . Your words gave me assurance and was too a great reminder for me ,although I listen to lots of doroose and read only Quran ;but your words were real assurance and great reminders , we all the time need that ,because we are still in this life and will be continuously tested. So I thank you again for the words you wrote and the peace I found in them .I ask you please keep writing, keep helping everyone by reminding them of their creator ,Allah will help you . I made duaa for you ,Ruqaya and Amr ,May Allah accepts from me in those blessed days Amin Heba

This book has brought me tears, comfort, and healing... though I don't personally relate to the experiences shared in this book, I've connected to so much. Asmaa has written beautiful reflections that can speak to anybody. Masha'Allah, this book is a blessing.

This book reminded me of Allahs peefection. It came into my life exactly as a beast that i buried over a decade ago rose to cause immense destruction to my mental health and peace. In this book through the words of the author Allah sent me a clear message to say Asiya's dua. This book spoke to my darkness and with gentle loving brought light to me. It made me say a dua which instantly lifted to Allah and his peace descended on me. I finished the book and cannot wait for sister Aasma to write something else. This book should be made mandatory in school curriculum as a classic as it helps us transcend the physical world and its overwhelming hardship into the refuge of Allah zul jalal wal ikram

This is more than just a book. I find myself yearning to read a few pages here and there, whenever I get a chance. It is a reminder to look for the good in this world, to remind ourselves that we relate to our Muslim sisters more than we know, and to always turn to Allah (swt). The way Asmaa writes is so honest and real. She does not sugarcoat anything and her openness is so very appreciated. I think this is a book that you will find yourself reading over and over again because the messages shared are so important.

Ever since I’ve read the first book I’ve been waiting for another one by Asmaa Hussein and this was worth the wait . So many emotions went through my mind while reading it especially the hajj incidents and everything , I absolutely loved it and I didn’t want the book to end . This is a must read especially when you feel low or you feel you have no one , but reading this book you know that you always have Allah ( swt ) even if there’s no one and that more than enough . I can’t wait for her next book .

A place of refuge is not deserving of 5 stars. If I could I would give it a 10 stars. This book had turned my brain satisfied my mind and touched the deepest portion of my soul. While reading this book and going through each chapter, it made me go through different emotions. Asmaa Hussein is one of those great writers who has the ability to go into depths of emotion of human being.

The emaan of a Muslim is said to be like a river! It has low and high tides. Whenever, I feel low or caught up in life, I read her books and subhanallah, they serve as emaan boosters to the right path!

Just when I thought nothing could beat "A temporary gift", Asma Hussein stunned me with her work once again!!! My words certainly cannot do justice to what my heart feels about 'a place of refuge'. I can only assure that, if you are looking for words of hope, faith, wisdom, sincerity, and healing, then this book is definitely for you! ♥️

If you read, ‘A Temporary Gift’ - than this book is for the one longing for more from the author. Asma writes from an angle of hope and shares how far from linear the personal journey to Allaah is. She explains in the most beautiful of ways why despite how far from linear that personal journey is - how lucky are those who take the time to reflect, and use their time of reflection to love their Lord more with. The author uses friendly reminders about returning to Allaah, in the way Allaah loves us to return to Him - that we have all known. But the author explains it in a way we can remember them for the rest of our lives and apply them to our everyday. If you’re someone who loves to read honest spiritual journey without sensor or shame, than you will LOVE this book. It’s to remind the one who reads it - how beautiful being human is, and how even more beautiful it is when we bring our humanness to Allaah, as He loves that about us MOST! ♥️

A book about hope, patience, faith in the divine wisdom of Allah, His infinite mercy and love. Asmaa beautifully connects the Quran and Hadith to her stories and you keep coming back to them for inspiration and insight, especially during these difficult times.

Beautifully written, this book captures so many emotions. The first chapter took me back to my own Hajj experience, and reminded me to find good in all situations. I remember we were on the bus with an older and constantly bickering couple who were not too pleased about all the delays, and then a blind man comes in, and starts praising Allah and went on and on about how he was blessed to just be here. All of us couldn't help but marvel at this beautiful individual, and it put our purpose back front and center in our minds. I'd forgotten all about this story :-) I love how the author is able to connect with Allah in any circumstance. To be aware of and turn to our Lord at the most difficult times of our lives is in and of itself a mercy alhamdlillah, and she writes about this constantly through out her book. The way this book is written, I felt I was right there with her when she saw the jelly fish at Chesapeake Bay, or while listening to those aunties in Egypt (😖🙄), and I can even imagine witnessing that joyous meeting with Farah in Madina! I love her honestly to herself and her daughter, and her certainty of seeing her husband in Jannah. May Allah make us worthy of His pleasure, and give us the ability to always turn to Him and the yaqeen to know we are capable of attaining His mercy. Thank you for writing this book, I will most definitely recommend it to everyone!

I never give reviews, but for this I had to. I bought this book and read it within two days. A book put together perfectly. It is a book of hope that over time, hearts can also heal 💕 After reading 'A Temporary Gift' I knew I had to buy this one when I seen Asmaa had another in her collection. I pray you reap the rewards of every heart you have helped, every broken soul you have given hope to once again. May Allah bless you, Ruqayah and Amr with a Palace in jannah near Him. Ameen x

Asmaa Hussein's words oftentimes render me speechless, but my heart sings and soars as I read her beautiful, deep, and always thoughtful reflections. I didn't think any book could beat A Temporary Gift, but leave it to Asmaa Hussein to surpass Asmaa Hussein. Mashallah, she has a gift for words unlike any other I've seen. She makes you delve deep within your soul to try to come to terms with Allah's will and wisdom while you're treading His path. A Place of Refuge instilled such peace within my heart as she related her trials and means of dealing with them to our role models in Islamic history, and allowed me to contemplate on how I deal with mine. I aspire to be as pious and strong in my faith as Asmaa has been, and as everyone should be. I can always count on her books and words to lift my spirits and give me an iman high. I'm so grateful that Allah has allowed her to share her gift with us all. God knows how many people you've helped, and continue to do so, myself included. May He be pleased with you, and grant you barakah and success in this dunia and akhirah. May He reunite you and Ruqaya with your beloved Amr in jannatul ferdaus. Thank you for writing yet another treasured masterpiece.

Asmaa has shared her story with a beautiful vulnerability and generosity. I absolutely loved the message throughout the book, of accepting our humanness, and allowing ourselves to let it be okay to experience our difficult feelings and thoughts compassionately. It’s such an important perspective that we all need! I also loved how Asmaa beautifully weaved her honest thoughts during immense emotional hardship, together with reminders from Quran and Hadith that allow and comfort those thoughts, affirming that Allah is the safest and most comforting place of refuge. I have been recommending this book as a real Imaan booster!

Asmaa’s words bring comfort to the heart that experienced loss. Having lost a brother my self, her words and reminders spoke to my heart. Allah puts us through hardships to bring us closer to him. Beautifully written mashaAllah! Asma is gifted with words SubhanAllah!

Asmaa in choosing to be vulnerable and open about her pain has out forward a book which will help all of her readers. Whether you have suffered a loss like hers or something less or something more, there is hope in her words and so much wisdom. It is written in simple words and gets straight to your heart. What makes it relatable and easier to swallow is perhaps the fact that Asmaa is not a scholar. People have a tendency to think scholars are learned so their faith is stronger and therefore I can't think like that. Asmaa's life and words are proof that you don't have to be a scholar to get Allah's help. Allah will help anyone who turns to Him with sincerity.

A simply powerful book that grips you from beginning till the end. And I say this because when I first read Asmaa Hussein's book ' A Temporary gift' which I would also definitely recommend,I hadn't really experienced losing a loved one but in a strange way felt so connected with the book and shed tears throughout it,couldn't put the book down until I completed it in 2 days. But this time I couldnt wait to read ' A place of Refuge' And I was right I could feel the pain, this time every word resonated with me,this time it was real, this time I too had lost a loved one and He was no other than my beloved father. He departed back to His creator last year 2019 on the day of Eid ul fitr.💔 Allah grant him and all those who have returned back the highest place in Jannah until we meet again. They definitely have all reached 'their place of Refuge' This book helped me strengthen my relationship with Allah to understand His plan is far greater than mine and yours. A book for every bookshelf💝

As soon as I started reading this book, I was in the journey with her. Every chapter in this book provided me with wisdom and lessons that I could apply to my own life, even though our journeys are different. You can truly feel Asmaa's feelings and emotions while reading this book. Often bringing me to tears. This book allowed me to recognize that I will have exactly was is written for me, no more, no less. This book is a powerful reminder of Allah's infinite wisdom and that Allah is truly the best of all planners. Definitely a book I have and will continue to recommend to others.

Sometimes when I experience painful moments it's hard to utter the right words or think clearly. But when I read your writings Asmaa I always find comfort in them because it helps me declutter my thoughts and words. Also I ordered this book in the last few nights of ramadan, and I wasn't expecting it to arrive before mid June because I like in Denmark. To my surprise I received it yesterday.

As soon as I opened the first page of this book I was transfixed and read it in one sitting. I absolutely loved it. A beautiful , reflective book which connects a personal journey to God in all aspects of life which really resonated with me and I am sure will with many others. Highly recommend, as this book will not only benefit you emotionally but also remind you of why our dependence on Allah is so integral to finding peace.

Loved it. Asma is inspiring and her reflections are thought provoking. Even if she isn’t sharing something new (relating to Islam) with her reader, her reflections are all powerful reminders that touch the heart. May Allah reward her for her work.

This Ramadan I told myself if I was going to read a book other than the Quran it would be Asmaa Hussein’s book ‘a place of refuge’. And it arrived today and I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. I needed this book because of my personal experience with grief and healing. Asmaa has a way of taking what you are feeling and articulating it so beautifully that you no longer feel alone. While reading this book, I found myself nodding in agreement with how she tied everything to developing our relationship with Allah: a relationship that gives us solace no matter where we are and what we go through. A place of refuge is a must read for all those struggling to make sense of grief and for everyone that sets foot on this journey of healing.

The title says it all, I believe. You know when you read something and you say to yourself, I couldn’t have said it better. Where you recognize the familiarity of emotions, incidents, thought process and the heart cries out SubhanAllah!, at the writer’s articulation. “a place of refuge” is about self journey, this time towards Rab and then back to oneself. Finding strengths affirming weaknesses and then calling out from within a palace of understanding and humility. These are the continuous themes of Asma’s writing and one can always be sure that they will end up gaining a spiritual uplift. Mashallah Tabarkallah. Another gem to add to our book collection, home library, book shelf, book mantle .. wherever we keep them, this book is a Must treasure to be added to our knowledge bank nourishing hearts and souls.

I love how Asma captured the intensity of human emotion such as sadness, contempt, envy, shame, guilt, fear, anger, betrayal, hope, forgiveness, and many more. As a reader, it felt as though a friend was speaking to me by empathizing with me and validating my feelings but at the same time kindly reminding me of Allah’s infinite mercy and love. Her raw emotions, honesty and openness throughout the book made it easy for me to connect. This book is not just for those who experienced a loss, heartache, or trauma. It should be read by everyone to improve one’s relationship with themselves, with others and most importantly with Allah. I am so proud of her for continuing to share her journey with us even though it may be difficult. Thank you Asma for helping so many of us ❤️

Just finished reading “A Place of Refuge”. It did not disappoint. Really inspires one to build a connection with Allah through the power of dua where ever you are in life. It is shorter than the first book but has a lot to reflect on.

I finished this book within the first 24 hours of receiving it. Asmaa has a God-given talent to share her painful experiences in a way that brings back hope, love and inspiration of God in all of our lives. Whether you have experienced loss in a way as deep as Asmaa's or not, this book, and every single word in it, will help you re-discover your own spiritual journey to God, in a way that is emotional, therapeutic, healing. Thank you Asmaa for being so vulnerable and sharing your deepest and darkest secrets, so we can learn and heal in our own ways. May Allah swt bless you and Ruqayah, and reunite you both with Amr in the highest levels of jannah. Ameen.
