When Everyone’s Too Busy, What Happens to Iftar?

Set in Ramadan, this story invites children to think about generosity, forgiveness, and the joy of sharing. With humour and warmth, it gently reminds families that iftar isn’t just about food on the table; it’s about community, kindness, and the blessings that come when we help one another.

Beautifully written and illustrated books! Ruqa-ya's Bookshelf has filled a huge void in our community by bringing Muslim children's books with moral values that children actually enjoy reading and listening to.

My son truly loves all the books I have purchased from Ruqaya's Bookshelf. Wonderful selection of diverse books that are truly relatable for Muslim children. This is a such a wonderful story to read during Ramadan with children and share reminders of generosity, sharing, helping, and giving to others.

A wonderful Ramadan story about helpfulness and generosity! ⠀ Mustafa Amca and his wife Ayse Teyze hold a big Iftar at their house every year on the first day of Ramadan, but this year Ayse was sick, and so Mustafa decided to do everything for the Iftar himself, because he did not want to cancel their beloved tradition. He asks his daughter for help buying the dates, but she makes an excuse. He asks his friend to help him make the soup, but his friend makes an excuse. He asks his neighbor to help him cook the dinner, but his neighbor makes an excuse. He asks his grand-daughter to help him make the salad, but she makes an excuse (she is playing video games, which really made it relatable to my kids lol). ⠀ Mustafa does everything himself, and when it was time for Iftar, he invites everyone to come and eat. They feel guilty about not helping and ask him how can they eat when they didn’t help. But Mustafa replies that Allah loves those who are generous, and that he wants Allah to love him. I honestly loved this book, and my children were giggling and entertained the whole time. I like how it taught my children about being generous, even when you might not see people responding in kind. I like how Mustafa did not give up when his friends and neighbors did not help him, but still persisted in doing the truth. This is a valuable lesson to teach our children. A must have Ramadan book!

A beautiful story of giving the best of yourself in a way that means the most to you.

I usually get a bundle of books for Ramadan, and this is my favourite this year. It reminds me of sweet uncles I’ve met, and their selflessness. 💓

This is one of our favorite books in our Ramadan collection! We love the twist from The Little Red Hen. The language and illustrations are warm and familiar and the storyline helps us all see what is most important in the end. This book has earned a special place on our shelf and our hearts!

-

Duaa Haggag

If you’ve read the Little Red Hen, this story will sound somewhat familiar to you, however there’s a fantastic twist. Where the little red hen wasn’t very forgiving to those that didn’t help her, there’s lots of generosity to replace that in this book. A great book for teaching about forgiveness and giving.

Sana Tauqeer

A lovely story that shows faith, tradition and community that ends with Islamic words of wisdom. This book is set in Turkey, and because of my familiarity with the Turkish culture I really appreciate the details of the illustrations; grandma's attire, the tea cups, the china cabinet. 📖 Mustafa Amca needs help to make iftar for the neighbours in order to keep their ramadan tradition alive. This year his wife is not well, so he seeks help from others for this special feast. His daughter, his friend, his neighbour and granddaughter seem to have petty excuses and cannot accommodate to his request. Mustafa Amca still carries on and keeps working hard in the kitchen to prepare the dishes on his own. At iftar time, once the food is ready to be served, everyone feels too guilty to eat since they haven't contributed to the iftar. Mustafa Amca kindly reminds them that God loves those who are generous with their loved ones and the needy thus he always wants to be loved by God. This motivates everyone to participate in the after-dinner clean up. 📖 Great lesson of generosity for kids and an important reminder for the adults in their lives.

Muslim Kids Book Nook

We just read “who will help me make iftar.” We loved it. My children were literally yelling at the characters to help mustafa “ just pause the game and go!” Lol! I actually started to tear up when Ayse was there for husband even though she wasn’t well. After reading, my children quickly volunteered to help me clean the house :) JAK for giving us such wonderful stories that become favourites for both children and adults 💗

-

Mahvish

It is very intelligent way to teach a lesson. Allah loves us to feed people, care and forgive them. Also, when you act with people that way , they recognize their actions and try to improve it. It is presented in a warming heart story.
