I love all of the books I've purchased from Ruqaya's Bookshelf, and appreciate this one very much. These books are wonderful for character development in our children, but also for parents! I find myself repeating lines from these books in every day life. I recently found myself saying, "____ needs it more than I do" (a beautiful line repeated throughout Green Dinosaur Umbrella) when gifting something to a neighbor. Hajj has so many rituals but the story introduces and teaches some of these things without getting into too much detail (though even less would have been fine too, with more details on the back pages if needed, etc.). But perhaps it's a good middle ground, not too much detail so as not to lose the youngest readers and not too basic so there's enough for older readers. I've been reading this book to my toddler and preschooler almost every day for the past year and it's helped me learn more about Hajj rituals and be able to visualize what it might be like (insha'Allah we will all be able to complete this pillar of Islam if we haven't yet)!

This is so creatively written MashAllah. We need more authors that write like this! I love how the Hajj manasik intertwined with this story of a boy who gives what he loves (the umbrella) to someone who needs it, and the ending is such a pleasant surprise. Must buy on ever Muslim mother’s list!

This book was a gift for my daughter’s first Eid Al-Adha she was 5 months only by then, and Honestly didn’t read the story until month ago, and I was honestly astonished by it! It’s Amazing! I’m an Early childhood teacher and I always look deeply in my daughter’s books! The language, illustrations, colors, characters and the ideas. I can say this was an exceptional book that checked all my boxes! May Allah reward the writer and I would love to see this book translated to Arabic 😍 I won’t hesitate to buy it again !

This book is good if you want to discuss social responsibilities with your child. It really talks about the fact that if Allah wants you to have something, HE will make sure you have it back somehow.

We love this story, it's the perfect addition to our hajj collection. My boys ages 8 and 10 enjoy reading it on their own, and having it read to them. I love how it takes the reader through the stages of hajj and shares subtle lessons about diversity and kindness.

Tuqa

My girls, 8 and 5, love this story with the beautiful lesson of sharing and empathy! We also ended up going on a hunt for a green dinosaur umbrella for a long time after reading it 😆

MashaAllah! Just read this book to my 3 year old. Wow it was beautiful in so many ways. It simply goes through the rites of Hajj while entertaining the reader with the story. It teaches so many lessons including kindness, helping others especially during the difficult Hajj journey, not looking at those above us but those below us, remembering the blessings of Allah upon us and the list goes on. The illustrations are just beautiful, too. Loved how they showed the diversity of Muslims in Hajj.

Brief Synopsis: Ibrahim (teenage boy) buys an umbrella to take to hajj [does Tawaf and drinks Zamzam]. Then the umbrella gets handed to an old man [takes it to Mina/prays at Arafah], the group leader [travels to Jabal Ar- Rahma, picks up pebbles at Muzdalifah, stays the night at Muzdalifah], to a woman with a little baby [throws pebbles at Jamarat, returns to Mina], to a little girl as an Eid gift, [does Sa’ee in Masjid Al Haram], and back to Ibrahim [Farewell Tawaf]. Overall, It’s a story about kindness and spreading kindness, and teaches kids to think of others. “He/She needs it more than I do” is such a beautiful thought to talk to your kids about. Its an entertaining story that just happens to include the “backdrop” of Hajj - which is an added bonus really. Each character with the umbrella does one of the rites of Hajj that can be talked about in more detail. Its not a “how to” instructional book on Hajj but a FUN (yet “educational”) story that includes a diversity of characters and would make a great addition to every Hajj Basket/Unit.

In this beautiful story, Ibrahim is going on his trip to hajj and picks out a green dinosaur umbrella to take with him. It shades him from the sun, and when he gets lost, the bright green umbrella helps his dad find him. When Ibrahim finds an old man, he shares his umbrella, stating: “he needs it more than I do”⠀ The umbrella passes from hand to hand and many different people use it to shade themselves from the sun...but finally, the umbrella returns to Ibrahim at the end of the story (and at the end of Ibrahim’s Hajj).⠀ ⠀ I absolutely loved all the beautiful aspects of this book. I loved how sharing is such a big part of the “umbrella’s journey”, and that so many people were so caring and generous with it. I also loved that there was so much diversity in the story, and that the end included an ayah about the diversity of Allah’s creation. ⠀ ⠀ My favorite part was how the book was about Hajj! It wasn’t a boring or cliche Hajj story, but the rituals were explained in a fun way that is entertaining to listen to. Tawaf around the Kaabah and Saiee between the Safa and Marwa are mentioned as being 7 times, Mina and Muzdalifa, and Arafat and Eid day are mentioned. ⠀ ⠀ It’s such a well rounded book, and I loved how it was in a story format that is interesting for kids to listen to. The end of the book contains a map showing Makkah, and is so easy for kids to look at and learn.⠀ ⠀ The pictures are gorgeous, the story wonderful, and the green dinosaur umbrella so adorable!

Omg I read the green dinosaur umbrella and thought it was fantastic! Absolutely loved and will recommend. It was so detailed about hajj - yet to find one like that and it also allowed me to ask questions to my son and explain the rituals of hajj and he asked sensible and interesting questions. Love love and will be using it in our crafts Inshaa’Allah

My family having done hajj Alhamdulilah (& kids having done umrah) this book brought us back to Mecca! It beautifully protrays the steps and lessons of hajj in a sweet story of a book and his journey (and how a simple act of generous kindness) can benefit soO many- but as with all deeds,, its never lost and will return (as the same or better). And its so Accurate that a funky umbrella maybe the only thing to help a lost person stand out to be found :) Loved it!
