Why Are Neighbours So Special in Islam?

Children love to wave, smile, and say salaam, but Islam teaches that neighbours deserve even more care. This story helps kids see that being kind, helpful, and thoughtful is part of their faith.

Hoda Elmasry

Hoda Elmasry wasn't the fastest runner at school, though she came close a few times in the 2nd grade. As the youngest of three siblings growing up in Philadelphia, she was often adding stories to her "new" old things. When she's not writing children's books, you'll probably find her twisting balloon animals. She is a mother, data analyst and kid at heart. She lives in Northern Virginia with her husband and two children.

Beautifully written and illustrated books! Ruqa-ya's Bookshelf has filled a huge void in our community by bringing Muslim children's books with moral values that children actually enjoy reading and listening to.

I love reading this book to my kids and my kids love this book too. As a parent I'm always worried about whether I'm raising spoiled kids because they are definitely more privileged than I was growing up and we are blessed with so much. Alhamdullilah. So I was really happy to purchase this book, to be able to remind my kids through the story that what's old can be new and even better than new! [And the next time we're at a thrift store, I can remind them of Idrees :-)] The character of Idrees is realistic and speaks like any child would and the mother is very calm and kind. I love how Ruqaya's Bookshelf books teaches lessons in a really fun way, and without being didactic. I loved how Idrees was in a dilemma and we see real time how he makes a choice - to do the right thing. Looking out for our friends and neighbors is the only way to true success. So grateful for all of the books at Ruqaya's Bookshelf! Alhamdullilah! May Allah make them successful.
