My kids really liked this book, especially since we are currently a family obsessed with basketball! This has a lot of cute themes and lessons that kids can learn from. It like how “Islamic” it is, with the word inshaAllah explained and present throughout the book. I like how the story shows that Basirah might not have gotten what she wanted (team captain) but that Allah’s plans are always better for us. Basirah learns to overcome her feelings of jealousy and recognize that friendship and teamwork are more important than just one really good player. Also, how cute are the illustrations. My favorite is the last page, with her winking at the reader😉 I also liked how Basirah is really close to her Dad! Another super supportive and caring Dad figure in an Islamic book❤️

There is so much to learn from this beautiful story: teamwork, friendship, hard work, trusting Allah and accepting His decree even if it is not what we want. Basirah is the best basketball player in the team and she is sure she will be chosen as the team captain because she says "insha'Allah". This special phrase proved to work when she got 100% on her quiz, getting the last dessert at lunch and making the shot from the free-throw line during basketball practice. However, she was not prepared when her best friend was announced as the team captain. How does she handle it? Talks it out with her dad. I really admire Basirah's strong bond with her dad in this book. His words of wisdom make her realize that she may need to work harder as a teammate rather than just a player in order to achieve her dream to be a captain for next year.

My daughter and I absolutely love this book! She just turned 4, but is a bit of a tomboy so she loves the fact that Basirah plays basketball and I love the overall message of it. It’s really a great way to show children that insh’Allah doesn’t always mean that whatever they want will happen.
