3 Powerful Du’aas for Laylatul Qadr
Remember Umama from Trouble at Taraweeh? She wanted more than anything to make a very special du’aa on Laylatul-Qadr, the night that’s better than a thousand months! What special du’aas do you have prepared for this night?
As it does every year, Ramadan has flown by, and we’re down to the last 10 nights of this blessed month. One of these nights will be Laylatul-Qadr, the Night of Decree, which Allah has informed us is better than a thousand months.
That means that any good deed you do on this night—prayer, du’aa, sadaqa, dhikr, reciting Qu’ran, maintaining family ties, and more—will be magnified, as if you did that good deed for a thousand months, which calculates to more than 83 years!
The Blessing of Laylatul-Qadr
Laylatul-Qadr is the night of Ramadan when the Prophet Muhammad received the first revelation from the Qur’an. It’s also the night that the yearly decree is written.
Allah tells us about this very special night in Surat al-Qadr:
“Indeed, We sent it [i.e., the Qur’an] down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn” (Qur’an 97:1-5).
Also, our beloved prophet told us to “look for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights”—which are the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th nights of Ramadan.
In addition to good deeds being multiplied many times over, Prophet Muhammad informed us that seeking out this night will cause all our sins to be forgiven!
“Whoever prays on Laylatul Qadr out of faith and sincerity, shall have all their past sins forgiven” (Bukhari and Muslim).
3 Du’aas for Laylatul-Qadr
Let’s take this opportunity to reap the benefits of this special night that only comes once a year, both for ourselves and our families. Let’s pass on this excitement about Laylatul-Qadr to our children so that they understand its importance and exert themselves too!
In addition to encouraging other good deeds on this night, making a personal du’aa list and helping your children make one too can help ensure that you remember your most important du’aas on every one of the last ten nights of Ramadan.
And alongside your personal du’aa list, here are three beautiful du’aas you can make on Laylatul-Qadr.
1. The most important—and most simple—is the one that our beloved prophet taught his wife Aisha specifically for this night:
Aisha (RA) said, “I asked the Messenger of Allah: ‘O Messenger of Allah, if I know what night is the night of Qadr, what should I say during it?’ He said: ‘Say: O Allah, You are the Most Forgiving and You love to Forgive, so forgive me'" (Tirmidhi).
[Allahumma innaka `afuwwun tuhibbul `afwa fa`fu `annee.]
2. Another beautiful du’aa to make is a Qur'anic du'aa asking Allah for the best of this life and the next:
“Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the life to come and keep us safe from the punishment of Hellfire” (Bukhari).
[Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasana wa fil ‘akhirati hasana waqina ‘adhaaban-nar.]
3. A third du’aa to recite and teach our children is an all-encompassing du’aa that covers everything we all want to ask Allah for:
It was narrated from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) taught her this supplication:
“O Allah, I ask You for all that is good, in this world and in the Hereafter, what I know and what I do not know. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from all evil, in this world and in the Hereafter, what I know and what I do not know. O Allah, I ask You for the good that Your slave and Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) has asked You for, and I seek refuge with You from the evil from which Your slave and Prophet sought refuge. O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and for that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed, and I seek refuge in You from Hell and from that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed. And I ask You to make every decree that You decree concerning me good.” (Ahmad and Ibn Majah)
[Allaahumma inni as’aluka min al-khayri kullihi, ‘aajilihi wa aajilihi, ma ‘alimtu minhu wa maa lam a‘lam. Wa a‘oodhu bika min al-sharri kullihi, ‘aajilihi wa aajilihi, ma ‘alimtu minhu wa maa lam a‘lam. Alllaahumma inni as’aluka min khayri ma sa’alaka ‘abduka wa nabiyyuka Muhammadun sall Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, wa a’oodhu bika min sharri ma ‘aadha bihi ‘abduka wa nabiyyuka. Allaahumma inni as’aluka al-jannah wa ma qarraba ilayha min qawlin aw ‘amal, wa a‘oodhu bika min al-naar wa ma qarraba ilayha min qawlin aw ‘amal, wa as’aluka an taj‘ala kulla qadaa’in taqdeehi li khayraa.]
May we all be among those whose du’aas and good deeds are accepted on Laylatul-Qadr.
